Outstanding contributions to architecture recognised in 2026 Australia Day Honours

The 2026 Australia Day Honours list has acknowledged and celebrated the contributions and achievements of 949 Australians. Among them are six individuals who have made significant contributions to the fields of architecture and landscape architecture.

Penelope Seidler of New South Wales (NSW) received the highest honour among the group, appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for "distinguished service to the visual arts as an administrator, patron and benefactor, to heritage preservation, to conservation, and to architecture."

Penelope is an architect and director of Harry Seidler and Associates. Together with her late husband Harry Seidler, she has won several architectural awards, including the 1967 Wilkinson Award from the NSW chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects for their Killara home, now listed on the NSW Heritage Register. She was awarded a Centenary Medal in 2001 for service to Australian society through business leadership and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2008 for service to the preservation of cultural heritage.

Justine Clark of Victoria was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for "significant service to architecture in a range of appointments."

David Gole of Queensland was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) "for significant service to architecture, and to heritage conservation."

Farah Madon of NSW was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) "for significant service to architecture, and to people with disability."

The late Stuart Pittendrigh of NSW was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for "significant service to horticulture, and to landscape architecture."

Richard Stringer of Queensland was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for "significant service to architectural photography, to education, and to history."
